So you've gone and bought yourself one of them there sports bikes, like all the comics recommend. You believed what you read, all those journos on holiday at Spanish race tracks with all their expenses paid for them reckon your RR1000RRR is the best thing since part baked bread. But here you are, in miserable Britain, sat in a car park, wondering whether it is best to carry your sodding helmet around with you all day or risk leaving it with the bike and having it nicked or maybe even getting really lucky and having a passing dog mark its territory on your property. Here in the real world you need a top box to keep stuff in.
How did it come to this? Has life not worked out well for you? Do you often make poor decisions? Begin by purchasing a second pillion seat, because you don't want to mess up your original. Compare it to the base of your 'box, this just might work!
The underside of the seat is likely a very awkward shape, I took my time in deciding how best to mate the two pieces together..
Hummm..
[HOT PILLAR DRILL ACTION]
Aha!
With the holes roughly in the right place I set about trying to make the mount sturdy enough to be usable. I would have ideally liked to use more bolts but due to the location of the holes in the plate and the awkward shape of the seat I could only realistically use three bolts. At first I tried big washers:
But this didn't work. So I dug the foam out around the bolts and used a combination of spacers up each bolt instead, this was much better. You could strip the seat of foam altogether but I think that would look horrendous. Nylocs and more washers were then employed.
I cut up a piece of hose and put bits of it around the mounting lugs on the frame that those front hooks go around to tighten things up. and bingo you have yourself a motorcycle you could almost use in the real world.
Now if only it was more comfortable and had a centre stand. And a rear brake that didn't need stripping every year. And was air cooled. And that you could still swing your leg over rather than thread yourself in between the box on the tank.. Oh well.
